A marketing career rarely follows a predictable path. It is shaped by curiosity, shaped by opportunity, and enriched by the willingness to keep learning at every stage. In this piece, Professional Academy Marketing Tutor and Tutor of the Year Dr Margaret Hyde traces her remarkable journey — from shorthand typist to PhD-level academic — and explores what a career built on professional qualifications and continuous discovery can truly look like.
From Shorthand Typist to Press Officer
Dr Hyde began her working life as a shorthand typist in public transport, before moving into a secretarial role in the press office. Recognising the opportunity to develop her knowledge further, she enrolled in a business studies degree at night school. When the press officer left, she was promoted into the role — and it was at that point that she made a decision that would define her career: to take the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Professional Qualifications. From that moment, her journey in marketing began in earnest.
It is a story that illustrates something important: professional qualifications do not simply confirm what you already know. They open doors that would otherwise remain closed, and they give you the credibility to step through them with confidence.
An Extensive Career in PR, Communications, and Marketing
What followed was an extensive career spanning public relations, communications, and marketing across both the private and public sectors. Dr Hyde worked in public transport, the NHS, and in the marketing department of a large further education institution. A particular highlight was serving as media liaison around the launch of the country's first new-generation tramway in Manchester — a high-profile project attracting significant national and international interest.
Across these varied roles, she developed a breadth of practical marketing experience that few practitioners can match: managing reputations, building relationships with media, communicating complex messages to diverse audiences, and navigating the very different demands of private and public sector organisations.
Transition to Academia and Research
In 2009, Dr Hyde took a significant change of direction, leaving the NHS to undertake a PhD examining service quality in health care, which she completed in 2013. The transition into academia opened yet another chapter — one defined by intellectual rigour, research, and a deepening commitment to education.
She went on to lecture at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, write materials for MBA courses, have her work published, and supervise postgraduate students. Alongside this academic work, she joined Professional Academy as a Marketing Tutor — bringing her wealth of industry and research experience directly into the learning environment and earning the distinction of Tutor of the Year.
The Journey of Discovery in Marketing
Dr Hyde's career is perhaps the most compelling argument for the value of professional marketing qualifications. It demonstrates that a career in marketing is genuinely a journey of discovery — one that rewards those who invest in their learning, remain open to new directions, and are willing to transfer their skills across sectors and disciplines.
The fundamentals of marketing — understanding customers, communicating value, building relationships, and responding to a changing environment — are transferable in ways that very few other disciplines can match. Whether in transport, healthcare, education, or academia, those core principles remain constant. What changes is the context, and that is precisely what makes a marketing career so varied and so rewarding.
