Changes to CIM's Chartered Marketer Status

The pathway to CIM Chartered Marketer status is now open to Associate (ACIM) members. Discover what has changed, what the pathway involves, and how CIM qualifications support it.

The Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) has made the pathway to Chartered Marketer status more accessible, opening it up to a wider range of marketers than was previously the case. Associate (ACIM) members — who were not previously eligible — can now achieve Chartered Marketer status alongside Member (MCIM) and Fellow (FCIM) members, provided they complete two consecutive years of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and pass the Chartered Marketer assessment.

This is a significant and positive change. It rewards proficient digital skills in junior marketers, encourages employers to consider those earlier in their careers as credible professionals, and provides a meaningful career milestone that is now accessible from the very start of a marketing qualification journey.

Who Can Become a Chartered Marketer

Associate members who are eligible for ACIM status typically include marketers who are early in their career with either a CIM qualification or a degree, or those who have been working in marketing for three years with some influence over budgets.

The benefits of achieving Chartered Marketer status include:

  • Recognition by managers and peers as a marketing professional committed to ongoing development, even early in a career
  • Assurance that skills remain relevant and current through the CPD requirement
  • A competitive advantage when applying for roles and promotions
  • The right to use the designation "Chartered Marketer" and the post-nominal letters CMktr after one's name, and to use the associated logo on business cards and professional profiles

The Pathway to Chartered Marketer Status

The pathway involves three steps:

  1. Become a graded CIM member — hold Associate (ACIM), Member (MCIM), or Fellow (FCIM) membership
  2. Complete two consecutive years of CPD — Associates are required to achieve 35 CPD credits per year; Members and Fellows complete four reflective statements aligned with the Professional Marketing Competencies framework per year
  3. Pass the Chartered Marketer assessment — an online assessment based on the Global Professional Marketing Framework. Those who hold a CIM Level 7 qualification are exempt from this final assessment stage

Once Chartered Marketer status is awarded, it is maintained through annual CPD submissions to demonstrate ongoing commitment to professional development.

How CIM and Professional Academy Qualifications Support the Pathway

Studying towards a CIM qualification contributes directly to the CPD requirements for Chartered Marketer status. The CIM Level 7 Marketing Leadership Programme in particular carries an additional benefit — students who complete the qualification at MCIM or FCIM membership grade and record two consecutive years of CPD are exempt from the Chartered Marketer assessment entirely.

Professional Academy's full range of CIM marketing qualifications — from Level 3 through to the Level 7 Marketing Leadership Programme — can contribute towards CPD and graded membership eligibility.
