National Mentoring Month: Make a Difference

National Mentoring Month is a call to action for professionals everywhere. Discover how mentoring shapes careers, why Professional Academy's MD volunteers with LTSB, and how you can get involved.

National Mentoring Month is a campaign launched in 2002 with the aim of unifying and expanding the mentoring movement, celebrating the power of relationships, and raising awareness of the importance of mentoring — particularly for young people. Though the campaign originates in the United States, the values it champions are universal. At Professional Academy, we are proud to mark National Mentoring Month and to reaffirm our own commitment to mentoring as a force for positive change.

The Role of Mentoring in Our Programmes

Mentoring is a fundamental component of the apprenticeship programmes we deliver at Professional Academy, and our professional qualifications tutors also provide mentoring support to learners throughout their studies. Whether formal or informal, mentoring plays a vital role in personal and professional development — helping individuals to navigate challenges, build confidence, and achieve more than they might have thought possible on their own.

The value of mentoring is not limited to the early stages of a career. At every level — from those taking their first professional qualification through to experienced managers pursuing senior leadership development — having access to a knowledgeable, supportive mentor can make a significant difference to the quality and pace of progress. It is one of the reasons we invest so heavily in the quality of our tutors and mentors at Professional Academy.

Take a Moment to Appreciate Your Mentors

National Mentoring Month is a timely opportunity — particularly as a new year begins — to reflect on the mentors who have contributed to your own development and to consider how you might take the next step in your mentoring journey. This might mean:

  • Reaching out to a past mentor to express your appreciation for the guidance they provided.
  • Seeking a new mentor to support you in your next career steps — through a formal programme run by a professional body or external organisation, or informally through your existing network.
  • Considering whether you are in a position to offer mentoring yourself — to a colleague, a junior team member, or a young person entering the workforce.

Mentoring does not require a formal title or a structured programme. Some of the most impactful mentoring relationships develop organically, through consistent support, honest conversation, and a genuine interest in another person's success.

Giving Back Through Mentoring

At Professional Academy, our commitment to mentoring extends beyond our own learner community. Managing Director Martin Hutchins volunteers with Leadership Through Sport and Business (LTSB) — an organisation that prepares and places young people who face disadvantage into meaningful careers with major firms. Through this work, Martin provides mentoring to young people at a critical stage of their professional journey, helping them to build the confidence, skills, and networks they need to succeed.

LTSB's work is a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of mentoring when it reaches those who need it most. Young people facing barriers to employment — whether through disadvantage, lack of networks, or limited access to professional role models — benefit enormously from the guidance of someone who believes in their potential and is willing to invest their time in helping them realise it.

Volunteering as a mentor is one of the most meaningful contributions any professional can make. It costs nothing but time, and the impact on a young person's confidence and career trajectory can be profound and lasting.

Our Commitment to Mentoring at Professional Academy

At Professional Academy, we mentor one another as well as our learners — and our commitment this year is to build on that culture through formal Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions throughout the year. These sessions ensure that our own team continues to grow, reflect, and support each other, modelling the very values we champion in our programmes.

We believe that a commitment to mentoring — whether as a mentor, a mentee, or an advocate for mentoring culture within your organisation — is one of the most valuable investments any professional or business can make. It builds capability, strengthens relationships, and creates the kind of environment where people genuinely thrive.
