Will AI Steal My Job?

The UK Government's 2023 report on AI and jobs reveals which sectors and roles face the greatest AI exposure. Here is what the findings mean for marketing professionals and how to future-proof your career.

Since the widespread adoption of tools such as ChatGPT, the question of what AI means for jobs and careers has moved from a theoretical discussion to an urgent practical concern. Many professionals — marketers included — have begun to consider whether AI represents a threat to their career or an opportunity to develop within it.

The UK Government's report (December 2023) on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on jobs and training provides a comprehensive analysis of how AI technologies are likely to affect various sectors of the UK labour market. In this blog, we draw on the key findings of that report to explore which roles and sectors face the greatest exposure to AI — and what that means for professionals planning their development in an AI-enabled world.

Key Findings from the UK Government's AI and Jobs Report

  • Occupational Exposure to AI: Professional occupations — particularly those involving clerical work in finance, law, and business management — are most exposed to AI. Examples include management consultants, business analysts, accountants, and psychologists. Teaching occupations also show higher exposure due to the relevance of large language models to content creation, summarisation, and knowledge delivery.
  • Industry Exposure: The finance and insurance sector faces the highest AI exposure, followed by information and communication, professional scientific and technical services, property, public administration and defence, and education. These sectors are characterised by knowledge-intensive roles where AI tools can automate or augment significant portions of existing workflows.
  • Geographical Variation: Workers in London and the South-East have the highest exposure to AI, reflecting the concentration of professional and knowledge-based jobs in these regions. Conversely, the North-East shows the lowest exposure. However, the variation in AI exposure across geographical areas is relatively small compared to the variation across occupations and industries.
  • Qualification Linkage: Higher qualifications typically lead to jobs with greater AI exposure. Those with a degree are more likely to be in roles with higher AI exposure compared to those with qualifications equivalent to A-Levels. This finding underscores the importance of developing AI literacy as part of higher-level professional education.
  • Subject Area Impact: Qualifications in accounting and finance, economics, and mathematics are linked to jobs with higher AI exposure, whilst qualifications in building and construction, manufacturing technologies, and transportation operations have lower exposure. For marketers and business professionals, this makes AI upskilling particularly relevant.
  • Augmentation vs. Substitution: The report draws an important distinction between jobs that AI is likely to augment — that is, assist and enhance — versus those it may substitute entirely. Research suggests that most jobs will experience augmentation rather than substitution. AI is more likely to change how roles are performed than to eliminate them outright, with professionals who develop AI competency being best placed to benefit from that augmentation.
  • Training Routes: Apprenticeships at Level 4 and above — particularly in accounting, professional services, and IT — lead to occupations with higher AI exposure. There is also a gender dimension to the data, with female students tending to enter training routes that lead to jobs with more exposure to AI.

What This Means for Professionals and Organisations

This analysis is essential for understanding which sectors and types of roles are most exposed to AI — and how the workforce needs to prepare for the technological changes ahead. The findings highlight the need for strategic planning in education and professional training to equip the workforce with the skills necessary for a future in which AI plays an integral role across many occupations.

The key takeaway for marketing and business professionals is not that AI will replace them, but that AI will increasingly define the standard expected of them. Professionals who develop a thorough understanding of AI tools, their applications, and their limitations — and who can use them responsibly and strategically — will be significantly better positioned than those who do not.
