7 ways to stay healthy when you’re studying

Studying alongside work and personal commitments can take a real toll on your health. Discover seven practical strategies to protect your wellbeing and stay on track throughout your studies.

7 ways to stay healthy when you’re studying

Studying is one of the most rewarding things you can do at any stage of life, but sometimes it can take a toll on health. With exam deadlines, holding down a job, and trying to maintain personal commitments, it is common and entirely natural to feel overwhelmed. This blog explains the importance of looking after wellbeing and how to stay healthy while studying.

It is absolutely acceptable to invest in your career through studying and it is equally important to invest in your health and wellbeing. In fact, it is essential. When your health is in a good place, your happiness is in a good place too — resulting in being more productive, agile, resilient, and creative. Colleagues, family, and friends will also benefit from you prioritising your health and wellbeing.

Staying healthy while studying is entirely achievable. The following seven strategies can help.

1. Talk to Someone

The principle that a problem shared is a problem halved holds real weight. Sharing and talking through how you feel can help to relieve feelings of stress and pressure. It might be a friend, family member, a course tutor, or a mentor. Whoever it is, they will always be there to listen and offer advice you can trust.

2. Prioritise Your Sleep

If there is one thing to prioritise above all else when it comes to health and wellbeing, it is getting a good night's sleep. Too little sleep can have a significant impact on the body, the brain, and the microbiome (gut health). Low mood and depression are connected with a lack of good quality sleep. Establishing a regular sleeping pattern will benefit you massively. At the same time, protecting your bedroom from anything that could damage sleep quality — such as mobile phones — is important. Avoiding caffeine after midday and limiting alcohol consumption will also assist with more restful sleep.

3. Stay Active

When you exercise, your body produces endorphins — the hormones that improve mood and levels of concentration, which is particularly beneficial when studying. Starting the day with 20 minutes of light exercise, such as walking, will have a positive effect on mood first thing in the morning.

4. Eat Properly

You are what you eat — food influences mood. Eating at regular times and maintaining a balanced and nutritious diet will improve mood, provide more energy, and help you to concentrate better. Opting for slow energy-release foods, rather than those that cause blood sugar spikes such as sweets and crisps, sustains energy and focus throughout the day.

5. Focus Your Mind

Mindfulness meditation is a practice that requires no religious or spiritual belief. It is simply the ability to be fully present in the moment. Mindfulness meditation helps to relieve feelings of stress and pressure — not just when you meditate but throughout the day. There are a range of apps and online resources available to support a regular guided mindfulness practice.

6. Take Time Out to Stop

Taking time to stop is something everyone needs to do — otherwise there is a risk of burning out. Instead of working for long stretches, aim to step away from your desk on a regular basis. Using the Pomodoro Technique — just five minutes of downtime between focused work sessions — can help keep you calm and maintain concentration over longer periods.

7. Do Not Over-Commit

Plan your time carefully, ensuring a realistic split between studying, working, and your home life. Agreeing to too many things and over-committing yourself is one of the most common causes of overwhelm for working students. Protecting your time and being selective about what you take on is not selfish — it is a necessary part of managing your studies and your wellbeing alongside a full professional life.
