Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2025

National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is here. We explore key findings from the AoA Big Apprentice Survey 2024 — and what they mean for apprentices, employers, and training providers.

National Apprenticeship Week is the perfect time to reflect on the importance of apprenticeships and the genuine opportunities they offer to individuals and organisations across the UK. To mark the occasion, we are highlighting findings from the Association of Apprentices (AoA) Big Apprentice Survey 2024 — one of the most comprehensive pieces of research into the apprentice experience conducted in recent years.

Association of Apprentices 2024 Report

The Association of Apprentices recently conducted its Big Apprentice Survey 2024, gathering insights from over 2,000 apprentices across the UK. The findings reveal the true impact of apprenticeships, the challenges apprentices face, and the improvements needed to enhance their experience.

The Big Apprentice Survey 2024: Why It Matters

The survey, completed in November 2024, captures real voices and experiences from apprentices across a wide range of industries and levels. Emily Rock, CEO of the Association of Apprentices, highlighted that the research goes beyond statistics — it is the voice of apprentices themselves, who are too often excluded from conversations that directly affect them.

At AoA, the belief is that apprenticeships are transformative. The survey validates the importance of peer support, mentorship, and community — core pillars of the AoA mission.

Key Findings from the Survey

1. The Value of Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships Offer Hands-On Learning and Career Progression

  • 74% of apprentices gain work experience alongside a qualification.
  • 51% see career progression opportunities as a major benefit.
  • 46% appreciate the hands-on experience they receive.

Personal Growth and Confidence

  • 78% reported significant personal growth through their apprenticeship.
  • 66% gained additional training opportunities.
  • 62% felt an increase in confidence as they developed their skills.

These figures demonstrate that apprenticeships offer far more than a qualification alone. The combination of structured learning and real workplace experience creates well-rounded professionals who are equipped to contribute meaningfully from day one.

2. Challenges Faced by Apprentices

Work/Life Balance and Time Management

  • 36% of apprentices struggle with managing work/life balance.
  • 33% face time management difficulties.
  • 32% struggle with completing and recording off-the-job training.

Stress and Anxiety Among Apprentices

  • 62% of apprentices reported feeling stressed or anxious in the last 12 months.
  • The biggest stressors were work/life balance (42%) and worries about the end-point assessment (38%).

These findings highlight the need for stronger support systems to help apprentices manage their workload and mental well-being. Employers, training providers, and support networks all have a role to play in ensuring apprentices are not just completing their programmes, but thriving throughout them.

3. Areas for Improvement

Based on the survey results, apprentices identified key areas that need improvement to enhance their learning experience.

Better Mentorship Programmes

Apprentices emphasised the importance of having access to experienced mentors who can guide them through their career journey. Mentorship provides not only professional guidance but also the kind of personalised support that helps individuals navigate the challenges of balancing work and study.

Enhanced Learning Support and Administrative Improvements

  • More personalised learning plans could help apprentices better balance work and study.
  • Reducing administrative burdens would allow them to focus more on skill development.

The AoA is already working on many of these areas to improve the overall apprenticeship experience. These insights are invaluable not only for shaping future apprenticeship policy, but also for ensuring that training providers and employers continuously raise the standard of support they offer.
