Chartered status

Work towards Chartered Marketer status

Chartered Marketer is CIM’s professional status for experienced marketers who maintain their membership and demonstrate continued professional development. The route combines graded CIM membership, two continuous years of CPD and a professional assessment.

It makes current expertise visible to employers, clients and peers, and lets successful members use the CMktr post-nominal. CIM also provides a certificate, digital badge and Chartered logo access—practical signals of a reflective commitment to professional development as marketing practice evolves.

Eligibility and renewal

Build and maintain your Chartered status

  • Join CIM as a graded member: Associate (ACIM), Member (MCIM) or Fellow (FCIM).
  • Complete two continuous years of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  • You will then be asked to complete an online assessment (CIM Level 7 holders are exempt).
  • Keep your CIM membership active and complete an annual CPD submission to retain Chartered Marketer status.
  • Use CIM’s Skills Analysis tool to understand the assessment format and the types of questions asked.

The assessment

Show the knowledge built through experience

  • The assessment tests existing professional knowledge; it is designed around experience rather than revision.
  • It contains 15 to 18 multiple-choice questions, is not sat under exam conditions and usually takes around 45 minutes.
  • Part 1 has seven questions on the Professional Marketing Competencies. Once passed, you can exit and resume later or continue to Part 2.
  • Part 2 asks you to select four technical competencies and answer a further 8 to 11 questions.
  • Members have five attempts. If all are unsuccessful, a further CPD submission must be approved before taking the assessment again.
