What we learnt at the 2015 Buy Yorkshire Conference…

Written by Professional Academy Sales & Marketing Manager, Michael O'Flynn

This week I, as part of our Head Office Sales & Marketing team, have been up in Leeds attending the 2015 Buy Yorkshire Conference. As I am now back in the Cambridge HQ I wanted to share my thoughts on what I learnt from the conversations we had with the conference attendees over the 2 days of the conference as well as out and about “networking”.

Yorkshire is buzzing with great businesses…

Yorkshire businesses are buzzing

Not only is Yorkshire abuzz with great businesses but the range of businesses is diverse not just in size or sector but in terms of the innovative ideas out there. We were lucky to discuss training with new companies that ranged from Yorkshire bike tours to custom made socks, digital design to repurposed steel manufacturing, data management to forward thinking recycling companies. In short there was a huge range of businesses that we were not just happy to talk to but felt lucky to be able to have a conversation with people that have a real passion for what they do.
Personal Growth

Personal Development and progression is on people’s minds…

At the event we were approached by a wealth of people whose first words to us were “I am looking to improve my [insert career path] skills. Is this something you could help me with?” most of who had an excellent idea of their skills gaps and where they want to be in the future. It was fantastically refreshing for us, we are always happy to discuss learning and development with people but whether it was a marketer, sales exec, BDM, team leader or account manager people seemed to have a real clear idea of what they needed to take the next step in their chosen career.

Learning & Development is a hot topic for all companies…

Team Growth

It wasn’t just individuals who wanted to discuss training and development, we spoke to a large amount of business directors, managers and those working in HR about the benefits of retaining and training over recruitment. Those we spoke to have the mentality we love to hear which is hiring the right people who have the right attitude and personality with a view to training them into the role. Companies were also talking to us about the direct benefits they had after their teams took part in training. Whether the training was in telesales, customer service, management & leadership or account management it was great to hear about the instant results businesses were seeing and how enthused their workforce was because of their learning & development practices.

We Love Yorkshire

Yorkshire folk are genuinely lovely…

One of the great things about attending an event in Leeds is the Yorkshire people and their hospitality. We see this every time we visit our Leeds based tutors and every time we are lucky to attend an event in the region. The warmth shown by people we spoke to and the genuine interest in what we do and why we do it was fantastic and we would like to thank everyone for that.

Everybody loves free mints…

Freshen up your skills

Finally, not the biggest of revelations but one we were happy to see was that everyone loved our free mints! We all love a conference freebie from packs of sweets up to coffee mugs and it was great to see that our mints were well received especially in the queue for the excellent seminars and panels. If any of the speakers want to thank us for the freshness of the seminar hall feel free to drop us a tweet via @ProfAcademy at any time.

In short we really enjoyed Buy Yorkshire, we are proud to have an excellent study centre and tutors in Leeds, but most of all we look forward to returning to Yorkshire in the near future to discuss training & development with you all again very soon.
